I got to meet...The Man

JennAnd as far as I'm concerned, The Man is the British fantasy writer Terry Pratchett. He is best known for his Discworld series, a collection of books that tell tales of the life and times of the denizens of the Disc, a pancake-flat world that rests on the back of four planetary-sized elephants, which in turn stand on the back of a galactic turtle. His books are, all at once, clever, hilarious, thought-provoking, full of suspense and an all around good read with a very high re-readability factor. The series is chocked full of made up characters that are just so real you forget they exist only on paper and in your head. And finally, one feature of his books that I consider my favorite is the sneaky yet openly blatant social commentary delivered in a non-threatening manner.

People who know me well know that I rarely, if ever, fawn over anyone. Being directly or indirectly star-stricken basically does not happen to me. However, today, I felt it happening while I was there at the bookstore where the signing was. Fortunately, I didn't completely geek out but I was plenty giddy! I wasn't sure what to expect of him and I was very pleased to find out that Pratchett is a very funny, easy-going and rather humble man. He's totally not arrogant, did not appear at all full of himself and was genuinely surprised, pleased and appreciative that his new book sold out BEFORE the event even started. I ended up at the end of the line with Jay and he had been signing and speaking for over 3 hours at that point and he looked and sounded tired and thankful the line was almost done. At that point, I really wasn't expecting this to happen because of all that but even after such a busy signing, HE STILL LET ME TAKE A PICTURE WITH HIM!

Splurd and Discworld, together at last!

That man is so cool. All is well in my world.
